Thanksgiving brings families together and so too does the Program for Survivors of Torture (PSOT). Last year, among the 1,200 refugees and asylum seekers PSOT cared for, we helped reunite over 20 families.
Our clients-among the most vulnerable “new” New Yorkers- were forced to flee their homes because of torture, persecution and war. They fled with only the shirts on their backs, leaving all they love and cherish behind-including their families. PSOT helps our clients rebuild their lives with outstanding medical, mental health, social and legal services provided regardless of ability to pay. After their family members arrive, we care for them as well.
These family reunions are a joy to behold. As one client recently remarked in PSOT’s crowded hallway- between hugs and tears with his wife and children who arrived earlier that day: “Thanks to my PSOT family, I again have my biologic family. I am whole again.”
Now more than ever, PSOT needs your help and support to continue our vital work. You can be the difference in the lives of our survivors.
From our PSOT family to yours, we wish you the happiest and healthiest of Thanksgivings. Even in difficult times, we truly have much to be thankful for during the holidays.
