Alex Cristina-Garcia
(Sobieraj), LMSW
Social Worker / Therapist
Alex Sobieraj is a clinical social worker/therapist. She earned her Master’s degree in Social Work at Smith College - a clinical, psychodynamic therapy program. Alex has experience working in medical settings, such as an integrated care clinic for queer/transgender/nonbinary patients in San Francisco, as well as providing individual and group therapy on an inpatient psychiatric medical care unit in a Philadelphia hospital. She is passionate about always working from a holistic, anti-oppressive perspective.
Before joining PSOT, Alex worked in the criminal-legal system with clients who were mostly facing felony charges. She completed extensive interviews with her clients who were incarcerated on Rikers Island and those who were out in the community on bail. Through the interview process, Alex would create space for clients to share their trauma narratives in a nonjudgmental, open environment, despite the charges they were facing. Alex accompanied her clients to Supreme Court in 4 boroughs to advocate, both orally and in the form of written mitigation reports, to get clients alternatives to incarceration or shorter prison sentences.
Additionally, Alex works in private practice where she does psychoanalytic therapy with clients who identify as queer and/or transgender/nonbinary people of color. Alex believes working collaboratively with clients to help them process through difficult experiences allows for growth, empowerment, and ultimately, a deeper understanding of behavioral patterns and how to move forward.
At PSOT, Alex does intakes with clients as well as individual psychotherapy.
