Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture
The Bellevue/NYU Program provides comprehensive medical and mental health care, as well as social and legal services to survivors of torture and war trauma and their family members. In the past year alone, we provided these multidisciplinary services to over 60 individuals from 70 countries. Since its inception in 1995, the Program has developed an international reputation for excellence in our clinical, educational and research activities. Our mission is to assist men, women and children subjected to torture and trauma to build healthy, self-sufficient lives and to contribute knowledge and testimony to global efforts to end torture.
Jane Mayer
Jane Mayer joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in March, 1995. Based in Washington, D.C., she writes about politics for the magazine. Recent subjects include the Pentagon’s secret torture policy, how the United States outsources torture (rendition), the prison at Guantánamo Bay, and the legality of C.I.A. interrogations. She is the author of the best-selling 2008 book The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals, chosen by the New York Times, The Economist, Salon, Slate, and Bloomberg as one of the best books of the year.
Richard Gottfried
Richard Gottfried is a member of the New York State Assembly and represents Manhattan. He chairs the Assembly’s Health Committee and is a leading advocate on patient rights and promoting professional ethics. He is the author of ground-breaking legislation introduced this year that would call for disciplinary action and potential loss of licensure for health professionals who participate in torture or prisoner abuse. This legislation is the first of its kind in the United States, and is already being considered for replication in several other states.
